Even though this thread is months dead, just for anyone reading it now....

As if Microsoft would spend years developing an API then release an update thans not backward compatible within a year.

This following explains what it the update actually means.

DirectX 10.1 is an incremental update of DirectX 10.0 which will be shipped with, and require, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 in January 2008. 10.1 will be backwards compatible with DirectX 10.0 hardware, but the new features will not be available until 10.1 compliant hardware is released. The release mainly sets a few more image quality standards for graphics vendors, while giving developers more control over image quality.

Hopefully thats panic over.

Normally I don't care for console gamers, but you have a very valid point.

@ Norbit and DXBS

Don't forget Flight Simulator X, they have a DX10 patch coming this winter... sorry, I'm a sim head.

lol@this...This is worded soo badly, it's like back in the 98 days saying your game won't work with your card because you still have DX6...If the programmers have any intelligence, the 10.1 update will be provided via redistributable packages, as per all previous versions of DirectX, and the cards will still work flawlessly in both modes, just limited functionality if your drivers aren't to the necessary versions...

This is total BS, all DX10 specifications will be backward compatible, 10.1 is just to bring some optimizations and some Sound updates. DX10 games are more than just one: Lost Planet, Call of Juarez have DX10 version support.

The reason I haven't upgraded to a DX10 card yet is very simple. Other than Vista there is no real reason to do so because AFAIK there is currently only one game released that uses DX10 (Company of Heroes). Plus DX10 will only work with Vista and I have no plan to upgrade to that until the finished SP1 is released.

The amount of people upgrading last year was hilarious because there wasn't even Vista back then. It's like buying a BluRay player before any BluRay films were released and having to just use it for DVDs. In both cases you get a slight performance increase with your old format but ultimately it's a waste of money and you would be far better off waiting until content in the new format is released before upgrading your hardware.

I have an 8800gtx. And if it doesn't support dx10.1 I'll just go an get another high-end card that does support it. You have to pay the price to be the best.

Steve is right.
John... you’re a comment whore, so stfu. Now, on to what I have to say about this predicament.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is so messed up. It makes me want to go cut something with a knife. Yes... I do own an 8800GTX and I am highly pissed off about this. I mean, I love this card. It’s the best one I have ever owned and I don’t have a single problem with it, hardware wise and performance wise. I got it about 2 months ago and I'm just now paying off the credit bill for it. Personally, I think NVIDIA and ATI would be absolutely crazy to make new cards for this SP. I can't even imagine how much money they would lose because of it. I most certainly am not going to by a DX10.1 card if it comes out. We should all go to Microsoft and take turns slapping every one that works there

Well John, not all of us have the cash to buy top of the line stuff. But as I had to replace my computer due to it breaking earlier this year, I bought a relativly decent machine with vista that came with a Dx10 card.

So no John, i'm not a poser, but I could get seriously screwed by this update and no I don't have the money to splash out on a new card. So shut your own mouth and learn some social decency.

"For instance, right now, the gamers who just threw down hundreds to get new graphics cards which support DirectX 10 aren’t too happy.

However, one side of the new DirectX version is that it essentially renders the hardware which requires DirectX 10 useless, because 10.1 isn’t compatible.

Yes, the first reaction is, “Oh my God, I just spent like five hundred bucks on a new graphics card and now I have to return it and spend more money?” "

Well BOHOO, I fell sooooo sorry for them...

Screw "top-of-the-line posers".

Jim, suck it up, and shut up. I bet you have plenty to buy all the hardware you want...
