Sony producer Leo Cubbin talked with Guardian Unlimited about Little Big Planet coming out for the PS3. This innovative new title encourages “user-created content” spurring gamers to create like never before. Players are encouraged to create their own levels and objects to share with friends. Cubbin says the idea is to give people the tools to create and see what they can come up with.
The idea of creativity can be quite daunting to a lot of people. You give a blank piece of paper and a pen and say, “Be creative!” What do I do? People are looking for inspiration. With LBP we want to create a fuzzy felt experience, where we give the component parts to trigger the creativity. I don’t think any of us as kids had a problem with cracking on and creating something when we were given a Lego set; it didn’t really matter how it ended up. We’re trying to give people the bare bones, and then we’ll let them go.
After launch any Sony content will come at a fee. However offerings for special events may make it worth while. User-created content can be shared at no cost.
The community will be open to developers and organizations as well as individuals. Players will be able to import content to their PS3 from a Sony Ericsson phone or a PC memory stick. However there are no plans to bring the Little Big Planet community to a standalone PC platform.
