The mysterious countdown on the Cryptic Studios website has run out revealing Star Trek Online. The fate of the troubled MMO has been in question since Perpetual Entertainment folded. However, the rumors that Cryptic Studios had taken the reigns of the IP have turned out to be true.

Powered by the Cryptic Engine, Star TrekĀ® Online will be developed for both console and PC formats. With customizable ships and characters from the Klingon Empire and United Federation of Planets, ground, space and shipboard gameplay and unique options for player-generated content set in the Star Trek universe, Star Trek Online is the MMOG that allows you to boldly go where no one has gone before!

The Star Trek Online site is back up again kicking off with a letter from Jack Emmert. It seems that Cryptic’s staff is full of Trekkies dedicated to bringing Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future into virtual reality.

Star Trek was never about a single character, ship or even planet; Star Trek was always about an entire universe. And MMORPGs are uniquely suited to create such a thing and allow players to explore every inch.

Admittedly, Star Trek has its challenges. We want to make a game that best captures the real essence of Star Trek. We see Star Trek as much about exploration as combat. As much about the variety of alien civilizations as it is about the core Vulcans, Klingons, Humans, etc. It’s going to be an exciting ride over the coming months as we begin to unveil STO. I can’t wait.

I have to say I excited to see this project take shape. Roddenberry’s positive vision of a universe united has had a profound effect on our world today. I want to see Cryptic do his legacy justice.

ST:O, should it fail, will be due to one of the following; poor design or the player base. I’m leaning much in the favour of it being the latter. Just browsing through the forum and seeing the expectations of things it simply cannot be, the assumptions based on these expectations and then the general attitude of the writing, you’d be hard pressed to get me to play this game over any of the other MMORPGs out there.

One point that does pique my interest is that it claims to be an MMOG, not a RP. This would insinuate a lack of levelling and subsequent grinding, whilst promoting the idea that your actions will play a bigger part into a grand scheme. I’d be lying if I said I had no interest whatsoever and should the game be designed well I think WoW would have a sneaky competitor. It’d have to be truly something though to get me paying a monthly fee.
