Columbus State University Opens its Video Games Department

All of you out there who want to get your degree in gaming, Columbus State University will be a school to consider.
This year they’ve opened the doors of their video game department, and the students’ initial reactions is that it’s a whole lot of hard work. But anyone who thinks that video games are made by simply playing games has a whole lot of disillusionment coming for them.
“This is a rigorous program,” Wayne Summers, Department Chairman, told the Ledger Enquirer. “There’s a fair amount of mathematics, and physics and programming.”
Really, any school out there trying to compete with Digipen is going to be intense. I’ve heard some horror stories of people dropping like flies from the program.
As far as CSU goes, at least one graduate has found success in snagging a job at EA. And who knows, you could be one of the next.
People who get into this niche of an industry do it for the love and passion of making games. You don’t get into it for the money, simply because there’s not a whole lot of money to be made (although I’m always hoping that will change). Only the very elite actually make good money by making games for a living. And those people are so good at what they do, they could really do anything else and still make a fortune at it.
This is why I’ve gone the hardware path with my education. There’s better money to be made there. Cellphones, handheld devices, embedded technologies. Sounds boring to most, but at least it keeps food on the table.
