Aside from World of Warcraft, the biggest MMO of 2007 and so far this year isn’t one you would name off the top of your head. According to the author of an article up on Eurogamer; it’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The piece goes on to defend the position that although CoD4 isn’t an MMO in the strictest sense of the definition, it does share many of the same gameplay elements that typify an MMO.

Call of Duty 4 proves that it’s possible to take some of the things that MMOs do right and distil them for a game that wouldn’t traditionally be seen as an MMO. The potency of the idea, even in this form, is obvious; the drive to play just a little bit more, because there’s a reward waiting just up ahead, is an incredibly powerful and addictive force for players

I can actually agree with the author on most of his points, and the idea isn’t one that hasn’t been presented before. The success of MMOs is changing the way traditional video games are being designed. One of the latest examples of this trend is the multi-player mode in RockStar’s Grand Theft Auto IV. I think we’re going to see the games industry moving ever closer to this formula as gamers demand more of a social element to their gaming experience.

Y'know, once we just played games for fun - for the sake of playing them.

That is still why we play them. I was so glad I convinced my brother to let me play CoD4 when he rented it for a few days. I haven't kept up on many of the latest FPS's. I've played through Doom 3, HL2, and um…that's about it, recently.
CoD4 is amazing, definitely the best of the series, and it's gotta be one of the best games out there.

    Seriously, racism is stupid. -Editor

Way to go! You just scored yourself the Idiot of the Day award with your ignorant, racist comment! Awesome!

I agree with IdiotPatrol for starters.

I can't agree completely with the article, though.
Apart from the challenges and ranks (Rank 55 can be done in 2 days if you please, or 2 months depending on how much you play)the game needs fine-tuning. Maps are the main problem, in particular spawn-points and layout. On some maps you simply get spawn-killed up to 10 times in a row in the Free-For-All game mode. The game has heaps of potential and could be setting a new standard in the FPS genre with just a few easy adjustments.

its easy to point out the faults, but just remember the pros by far outway the cons, COD4 is an amazing game, graphically as well, though it was kinda short single player but the multiplay more than makes up for it. as far as the kill arabs thing goes, one thing i will say is i applaud them for doing that. i played a tom clancy shooter back in the day, that came out around the time everyone was panicking about terrorists, it had you shooting white supremacists….(was it Sum of all Fears?). thats stupid, political correctness infects everything now and i don't want to see it in my video games. I remember when that blackhawk down or whatever game cam out people were complaining that you were killing black people..thats stupid

COD4 is probably one of my favorite games as of yet. I've always been a fan of FPS games built on the Quake Engines. It's amazing both in graphics/gameplay as well as the advancements in technology as far as the engine that powers it.

Three things that would have made it better would have been to work on the spawn camping issues, fix the server browser problems, and get rid of Punkbuster and use MMO anti-cheat like nProtect's GameGuard. I still see cheaters using Wallhacks and Aimbots everyday.
