Wired has posted an interesting article on how some of the weapons in Halo 3 were designed. In it, the developers explain how they tweaked some weapons from Halo 2, created new, balanced weapons, and introduced different deployable gadgets to add more strategy to the multiplayer. He also talks about where the inspiration for some weapons came from. The deadly Spartan Laser for example, was based around the “Galilean telescope beam expander,” an actual military weapon being researched. Also, the “bubble shield” apparently almost didn’t make it into the game. They finally decided to go along with it after it was shown in a TV ad deflecting a missile from Master Chief. It’s an good read, and the results of the team’s work — million upon millions of people playing the multiplayer even right now — speak for themselves.
