MMO Magic has released the first installment of a two part developer journal on its Citadel of Sorcery MMO. Part one focuses on the basic concept of the CoS setting.
We would like to ask you to suspend your preconceived ideas of what should or should not be in an MMO game and give this new concept a chance. We’re attempting to create a new experience, one that we hope you will enjoy. In fact, one of our biggest hurdles will be to get you to try the game without thinking about other games you have played, and just experience this new style of game play. Give it a chance and we believe most of you will enjoy your adventure.
MMO Magic is designing a living breathing world that grows and changes as time goes by and characters interact with it. A character’s choice to aid a village under attack or to stand by and watch the carnage affects the village’s survival. If it’s destroyed, it won’t magically reset as if nothing had ever happened. It may rebuild in time or become a ghost town. If the it survives with the character’s aid, the character will gain fame, popularity and allies among the villagers but may make enemies of those people who wanted the village razed.
Quests will also be dynamic. The quest engine will create adventures tailored for each character. Past actions, places they visited and enemies and friends made along the way will all factor into quests the character is offered.
My main gripe with most MMOs is that nothing your character ever does seems to affect the world. Most of the settings are static; expanding into new territories but never changing once the code has been executed. I’ve always wanted to play a dynamic MMO like this although I can’t begin to imagine the work it will take to maintain and evolve the CoS world setting. I will definitely be keeping an eye on CoS. I encourage you to read the entire dev journal about this new type of MMO on MMORPG.
