In a recent interview on Planescape: Torment, Chris Avellone spoke about why videogames aren’t judged by the same standards as other forms of entertainment media. As BellaOnline points out, Planescape: Torment has an estimated word count that’s equivalent to reading the first six books of the Harry Potter series. Unfortunately, although Planescape deals with very adult issues, videogames ranked right up there with comics and manga as immature forms of entertainment. Avellone believes the day will come when videogames have their own Oscar equivalent as the film industry and games industry will meet in the middle as games move towards becoming interactive movies.
Avellone also confesses that he would rather see knew stories in the Planescape setting than try and update the classic game.
I’d much rather see new stories and adventures in the Planescape universe, like the NWN2 mod community is doing with Purgatorio.
