Atari and Cryptic studios formally announced the upcoming release date for the anticipated massively multiplayer superhero game – Champions Online.
Cryptic, best known for developing NCSoft’s City of Heroes/Villians and an unsuccessful attempt to bring Marvel Super Heroes to the MMO market, purchased the long running Champions tabletop RPG property from Hero Games over a year ago and quickly began the process of bringing the four-colored workd to the market. Fans of superhero games can expect some lessons learned to make their way into the new title including more modes of locomotion – like swinging and the new Nemesis system that allows players to not only create the hero but their arch foe as well.
More info and the Nemesis intro video after the jump.
Along with today’s announcement Cryptic and Atari also released a new video detailing the Nemesis concept.
Why should anyone care? Well Champions has a long developed comic book setting thanks to the decades of support in its traditional RPG medium and the team at Cryptic understand what makes a viable superhero game.
The title is expected to ship to retailers worldwide on July 14th. For more information check out the Champions online website.

Looks like I will have to try this one out, just for the simple fact I played the table-top version for years. I just hope it has better ‘end game’ content than CoH did.
Same here. I played the tabletop, and all signs so far point to this being a pretty darn good representation of that.
This is a must get for me as well. I’ll finally be able to play against you guys from the comfort of my couch on my Xbox 360. Xbox / PC cross platform play FTW!!
I played it on the 360 during the press day..it controlled very well.. I’m anxious to see how it turns out though. I’m a sucker for tabletop RPG conversions…
