Bruckheimer Dons Game Developer Hat

In what looks to be a brilliant move, MTV announced that its games division and juggernaut Hollywood film producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, will be joining forces. The newly founded Jerry Bruckheimer Games will work with MTV Games to create “original games based on original ideas.”
According to MTV News, the deal was struck earlier this year. Even still, it’s far too early to discuss where either are going with this. No doubt, Bruckheimer will most likely be recruiting the best talent in the gaming industry to achieve his goal of world domination. When asked specifically what kind of games they might bring to any already stacked table, Bruckheimer had this to say:
“I think the same kind of stuff we bring to television and films. We always want to look at things a little differently from other people. Pirate films were dead for a long time, and we put Johnny Depp in it and created an unforgettable character. We did the same thing with fighter pilots in ‘Top Gun’ and dancers in ‘Flashdance.’ So we’re just trying to see things a little differently.”
Whether Bruckheimer has the knack for creating games is a question many are asking. Bruckheimer admits he’s not a gaming expert. He did comment that he has played Halo and plans on rocking out the holiday (on drums, no less) on his newly acquired Rock Band gift from MTV. Gaming expert or not, it seems MTV didn’t care either way. Here’s what MTV exec Jeff Yapp commented on the matter:
“What I wanted was his ability to tell a story that uniquely connects to an audience and now to give him a new set of tools, which is the interactive set of tools that he has not had the opportunity to play with yet. Someone said to me that before he came to television he was largely a film guy, and film guys go to TV, and very few of them succeed. Well, Jerry clearly succeeded there.”
If I were an MTV exec, I’d probably not care either. I mean he’s Jerry frickin’ Bruckheimer. He’s a modern day King Midas. Anything he touches…
MTV Multiplayer posted a brief interview with Mr. Bruckheimer shortly after the announcement. Bruckheimer answers various questions such as: Why MTV? Why original games? And of course, Why drums? MTV Multiplayer also posted an interview with MTV’s own Jeff Yapp explaining his take on the deal.
Personally, I can’t say I have much faith in this conglomerate of mega-Hollywood film producer meets has-been TV corp. Still, having Bruckheimer slap his name on the box probably ensures it will turn a tidy profit, even if it turns out to be crap-in-a-box.
