And somewhat contradictory statements here. To paraphrase:
1) "images don't have any real effect"
2) "sex sells"
If the thousands of images we are exposed to (both voluntarily & involuntarily) on a daily basis had no effect, then there would be no multi-billion dollar advertising industry.

How about a game with guys with gigantic balls that flop & jiggle while they fight? Oh, you don't like it, you think it's ridiculous? Don't worry, there will be ball size & buoyancy adjustment options.

And I'd just like to add, that a man (or men) can appreciate and enjoy "all" that goes with a females anatomy AND STILL think of them as a person!!!

Some would have everyone believe that just because you see an attractive female and you let your appreciation show it's sexist or objectifying.

News flash to all the women/girls reading this...you have more power in a simple smile & polite hello than most of you will ever realize!

Some what to be recognized and treated as a woman but all hell breaks loose of there ever a hint of acknowledging any attractive features.

Well guess what ladies, it's your sex that make you a woman and thus different. Differences provokes interest and biology provides the rest lol

To put it plainly, just because a guy sees and acknowledges that a woman /female has different parts that catches his eye...doesn't mean we don't or can't see the forest for the trees so to speak ;)

We see the whole package, some parts just stand out a bit more than others at first glance!

It's a matter of perspective I guess, but I'd suggest enjoying it instead of trying to fight it...you do realize you catch more flies with honey instead of vinegar right???

Regards and Respect to females and their forms everywhere!

It called make believe, they're fake, it's slightly titillating entertainment meant to garner a smirk here and a smile there...

And similar events happen in a mall or club every day. A girl with a healthy bust and fit physic gets noticed, just the way it is. Yes other other aspects of a person's character like a great personality is just as or more important in the long run...but a good personality doesn't turn heads at first glance now does it ;)

I'm just saying...it's been put in movies and games and ALL kind of marketing for a reason. It gets attention (rightly so imo) and it's a bit of fun.

Best make your peace with it because basic anatomy isn't changing any time soon ;)

nothing but a bunch of fat girls and little-dicked, spineless, two-faced nice guys trying way too hard pretending to care about feminism. there are real, all-natural girls with way less "realistic" (of course, in the context of nerds talking about girls, "realistic" really means "just ugly enough to wheedle into a drunken pity-fuck") proportions than any girl imagined by a programmer or designer, and they're not nearly as rare, as cognitively deficient, or as hateful as embittered nerds who wasted their lives on the internet because they really believed that having fifty level 80 wow characters would someday allow them to have their revenge on the successful, attractive, interesting people (read: teh evil jerks and their girlfriends), would have you believe.

btw all girls secretly want to be objectified, it's science

The sad thing is, Major_Tweak, that we can no longer buy a decent comedy without getting a little porn.
Over half the movies out there have some nudity in them, and I am not just talking about female.
We see male butts ALL the time, and breasts too! (That really grinds me when we see breasts, simply because I am a female who gets uncomfortable with nudity in general, and very jealous when the boyfriend sees ^^; )
The media has distasteful depiction of nudity. Personally, I would like to see less...
though I am kind of trailing from the point of this article.

dude, of course girls don't look like this in real life. real life is boring, why do you think games get made in the first place?

think anyone's gonna buy Real Life Simulator 2009 (now with taxes!)? doubt it.

also there are plenty of "unrealistic" (sexy, buff, skilled, intelligent and generally interesting) dudes in video games. hear many dudes complaining? nope. hear women crying for more fat, ugly, nerdy, sweaty, awkward and socially incompetent dudes in video games? nope. why? because no one wants to look at ugly people.

got a real kick out of the last paragraph. It's a Male Industry directed at Men! oh noes! it will never change unless you do something about it. no game company cares about you, or women in general. you don't buy enough games to matter. if you start buying games, you validate the current dynamic. therefore your only real option is to get some capital and start your own gaming companies. this has been done, there are several gaming companies owned by women already. as expected, the games usually end up being pretentious graphics-enhanced books designed to showcase how artsy, profound and emotionally complex the creators are, and bring a whole new level of boring to the gaming world. thanks!

by the way, normative judgments are irrelevant when it comes to video games. there is only one thing that matters, and that is profit. morality and artistic integrity are distant also-rans, if they are considered at all. any argument about whether this is the way it "should" be is masturbation. nothing "should" be any way or another. everything just is; nothing has meaning. except money. and boobs.

Wow, I find almost all of these comments extremely depressing. How is everyone missing the point? It's not about men being dissatisfied with the real women they meet (...I'm really kind of shocked at the male-centeredness of such a concern--poor men will no longer be satisfied!) or that women will feel they have to live up to impossible ideals (they do,) but just the very fact that all of this OBJECTIFIES WOMEN. As in, it turns women into dehumanized objects SOLELY for the pleasure of men. I don't care if there are ripped up dudes in video games--hey, you need muscles if you're going to fight, and muscles imply strength and capability. The ridiculous proportions of women's breasts in video games, however, do the exact opposite: they're completely superfluous, they detract from any other assets she might have as a character, and put the focus SOLELY on her body, because unless the video game is about breast feeding, her exaggerated breasts, unlike a man's muscles, have no use here except to be ogled.

Honestly, reading these comments depressed me. It's not that it's "getting old," that it's "unrealistic" or that I'm prudish because I can't take a little nudity. It's INSULTING. It's insulting to me as a human being of the female sex. You can claim it won't affect how men and women think, but how could it not? If you're staring at certain images for however many hours of your life, of course they are going to affect you in some way; the fact that you are unaware that they may affect you can make the effect all the stronger. The saddest part is that the portrayal must also in some capacity reflect already existing attitudes, not just promote them. I think the proof for that assertion comes in some of the comments here.

Not to go on a long harangue about it, but Opinionated's comments particularly disturbed me.

"I'm on the whole very sympathetic to women's issues and I'm for equality. But the woman's position in society has developed over thousands of years, and it's not gonna change for real in a few decades..."

What do you think life was like in 1950 for a woman? Men can brush these issues off easily because they don't feel the privilege they have because they were born with it. As a woman, I still feel like I am disadvantaged in many respects, but it's the work of the generation before mine that changed this informal law from a formal one. Only a few decades ago, newspapers printed wanted ads in separate male and female sections, women couldn't live independent, respectable lives without men; women were simply seen as _lower_.

Thousands of years? Are you aware that the low status of women largely came as a result of the Industrial Revolution, and that the relative status of women has varied greatly over these thousands of years? Don't let the goodie homemaker/male breadwinner post-WWII stereotype fool you.

I'm trying not to get too steamed up about this, but I'm just shocked at the attitudes I find in this thread. Maybe the complacency comes from thinking women _are_ actually equal in society these days. Today, in 2008, women still only make 75¢ for every dollar a man makes. These are real issues.

I get upset at these remarks because it encourages a lack of respect for women, and the idea that women exist for the pleasure of men. Not to get frighteningly statistical on you all, but I always remember vividly that battering is the single largest cause of physical injury to women and that rape is really frighteningly rampant. Portraying women in this way, not as the exception but as the rule, in media (and I'm not just blaming video games) enforces the general opinion that these behaviors are ultimately options (or even acceptable).

I'm not saying make characters ugly, I'm just saying this is a real issue that deserves real consideration, not something for idle jokes and heterosexual posturing. As stitch says, it also shows a complete disregard for women's interests in advertising and video game development. It's a male industry directed at men, and it makes women invisible.

"...gamers need to stand up and demand more real portrayals of women in gaming!!"

No, I don't want to play a video game with female characters that are 30 lbs overweight, flat chested and gigantically assed.

I find the bouncing boobies much more entertaining.

If you want realistic... GO OUTSIDE! That's "real" 24/7.

When it comes to BOOB-PHYSICS; my only complaint is when there all set the same!

there's nothing worse than a set of B's flopping around like there G's
OR a set of J's that have as much spring as a set of A's

I find it really sad that we as a people will allow insane amounts of violence but BOOBAGE is where we draw the line?!

I would rather see my nephew thumbing through a copy of Juggs than Guns n Ammo.

Breast physics may be very exagerated sometimes, but the fact reamins, any straight male likes them to some level ( admit it), maybe we should say those kind of games and developers could care less about any female opinion, in others words DOA.

LOL!!!
Obviously they all have implants, because when they lie on their backs, their tits point to the sky just like that!

Also, too much time spent on the tits, not so much on the booty.

 First things first.
I am a female. I am a feminist. I also have an interest in sex and sexual behaviors. I have spent time looking into it.
I have no problem with sex in games or sex in the media. I am more than happy for there to be perfect jiggly breasts abound.
I am straight and I would rather see an attractive pair of breasts in video games and on TV than the average woman. If I have to look at something which I believe is partially an art as much as anything, I want it to be aesthetically pleasing. People in the arts have been painting and drawing the ideal breasts for years. Why should that change simply because of a change in medium?

I understand that guys need their fantasies. It's part of their nature. Men have always fantasized and they always will about nicer breasts than the ones they have access to.

I have of course generalized. There is a minority of men and boys who are obviously not able to separate fantasy and reality.
But most guys are able to realize, that no matter how fantastic digital breasts may look, gropeable real ones ALWAYS win. And if they don't see that and would rather sit and play with their digital lovelies, they probably wouldn't get/don't deserve a real woman anyway and are certainly not the kind of males I want anywhere near my gene pool.

I'm with Sureright - all that jiggling is QUITE real in an older gal whose boobs are saggy. Not in the teenage girls who can't hold up a pencil yet.

You want realism? How about a game where the women with the big boobs have to deal with ACTUAL PHYSICS in using a sword or bow. There's a REASON real martial artists wear sports bras to hold their boobs in OUT OF THE WAY!

hey have yu seen heavenly sword ? that woman has a tiny body and no curves at all. she looks way to thin. raiden also looks to thin (mgs2) his face looks like an airbrushed teen magazine model. there are alot of people men and women who are turned on buy unrealistic bodys bodys that are too thin (like some models) skin that is too perfect, (being totally hairless and toned yet thin) breasts that are to large to fit the body, waist that is to thin to support said breasts. yep people like some odd things. however if you look at alot of video game women now a days their bodys look like they would work in real life, yes they have bib breasts, but they also have big hips. take ivy for example her new breasts are huge but so are her hips and her waist. as for the physics games are not yet perfect , helleven hair physics dont look perfect yet (yes even monsters inc was great but not 100 percent perfect)

kathleen it sound like your telling fib to me, yes it is very possible that a situation like that could happen . but its just to well " convenient". you sound very angry in your post, but if you trully have a guy like that then you have no reason to be angry. are you saying that yourm ad at the fact that guys who like those games exsist? angery that there are guys/girls who like bad things or things that you consider to be bad? thats a very childish attitude and i dont think you have a right to tell people what is bad and what not to like. i will end with an old saying "if you obesess to much on things that upsett you , you will die of your own agony." (this was all said in a very calm tone , im not here to start fights and my life is far to busy to respond to any comments.
