Breast Physics: A Growing Social Problem?

By Shawn on Friday, July 27th, 2007 at 2:12 PM PST In Editorials, Features

Sex sells, we all know that.

Since the greed generation of the 80’s its been the simplest way to get attention. Just produce a product with scantily clad men or women on it or in it and people will flock to your corner right? Well in a market where every character is sexy or cool the sex obsessed fanboys in the game development biz figured out a simple method to take objectification to the next level using a discipline of emergent mathematics called Breast Physics. Unlike the legitimate field of biomechanics as described in this article we are mostly limiting the discussion to the video game implementations.

doa4 2 Breast Physics: A Growing Social Problem? Now Breast Physics (unlike say fluid dynamics or quantum mechanics) is not a recognized field of scientific research. Evolving with the video game genre from its earliest days in Custer’s Revenge for the 2600 up through Leisure Suit Larry and the Dead or Alive titles (especially DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball ), this field of study “floated” to the top of the video game simulation industry (thanks to the huge number of game designers who simply never got out of the office enough to interact with real women).

There are quite a few examples today of games built and sold completely around this unique simulation field and the latest game to show off advances in breast physics simulation - Dead or Alive 4 bounced onto the Xbox 360 in full color-high definition glory, or the numerous scantily clad elves running around in games like World of Warcraft – which is what brought this subject to mind.

boobs taki Breast Physics: A Growing Social Problem? There are many questions about this field of study but simply put the unified theory of breast physics states that if you have a female video game character with large.. shall we say assets.. they will have the most expressively modeled motion prediction and reaction of all the parts of the human form – including hair or facial features. Breast physics infiltrates every known genre of games – sports games, fighting games, RPGs, and even simulations . The biggest concern though as someone who enjoys eye candy as much as the next man is: Does this unrealistic portrayal of human anatomy set unrealistic expectations for young male gamers when they actually encounter the real thing? Honestly think of all the boys out there who’ve learned through their video games that women’s anatomy comes with independent suspension! Real women don’t strut around in skimpy clothes while their chests jiggle like strapped on Jell-O for everyone to observe. More importantly how can any real female ever hope to live up to the fantastic behavior of these modeled mammaries?

world of warcraft elf blue 3701253 Breast Physics: A Growing Social Problem?Gaming is still a fairly young hobby, one that faces assault from all sides in the media circus. While I personally find the continuously exaggerated proportions of modern video game vixens laughable it seems that consumers as a whole continue to encourage such behavior. Eidos’s Queen of the Tomb, Lara Croft recently underwent a sizable breast reduction for her newest game but it seems Lara is an exception. The girls of DOA continue to wiggle and jiggle in outfits no real woman could hope to swaddle their bosom in while throwing a roundhouse.

In order for games to move out from under the scrutiny of gaming for its two biggest attractions – Violence and Sexuality (both key aspects to adolescent wish fulfillment I might add) gamers need to stand up and demand more real portrayals of women in gaming!!

The growing ranks of GRRL gamers out there (well most of them anyway) want interesting stories, social dynamics and good action and so should the guys – its too bad game developers keep delivering breast physics as an answer. Maybe after addressing this we can approach the unrealistic body image that Master Chief presents to young boys and how it is driving them into fits of depression.

Societies ills must be handled!

We must demand less buoyant representations!

I agree with your views about breast phisics, they are too “up front”… although i disagree with your statement “Maybe after addressing this we can approach the unrealistic body image that Master Chief presents to young boys and how it is driving them into fits of depression.” because it’s basically the backbone of the storyline, Halo runs on the “supersoldier”/ spartan theme… Boys takin at an early age and turned to extraordinary soldiers… if his structure were changed you would have to change the books, and the games both (spind a bit of green)

  3. Gunheart says:

…ITS A VIDEO GAME! NOT REAL! THERES NOTHING WRONG WITH BREAST PHYSICS!!!!!

  4. HuggieSunrise says:

    Oh.. bravo.

What is the logic behind this issue? What is the logic behind even writing this? Where you bored?

    My points.

Breast physics? I think is name calling a simple observation in to one use of a larger and much more expansive field of simulation in four dimensions. Modeling a humanoid body is not easy without a template to work off of and to call breast physics an intensive focus of study is sensationalizing for the sake of this tired little document.

The second paragraph is a groaner. I disagree to a made up term being compared to two other overused terms (because of little understanding of both Fluid Dynamics (engineering) Quantum mechanics (A theory based on an idea on how the universe works.)

And breast dynamics which is a made up term coined on, of all places G4 T.V.

I refuse to submit the idea of “realistic” depictions of anything should be stapled or pressured into any game where a creative vision NO MATTER how prostituted for a market or a gender to buy should be demanded at all.

Perhaps the problem is in how honest we are being to ourselves.

    For example…

Porn doesn’t lie to you, it is what is, the idea of pornography is not a new one and doesn’t lie.

Where now we have a game rating system that is laughably inadequate to enforce a demographic of any type to submit to what concepts or ideas cant be disseminated to an individual if they really want it.

The idea of what is permissible or isn’t is the root of ANY social problem that exists. What does the idea of a male or females individual body image have to do with what they see when the decision about who or what they are lies solely with them?

Does it concern anyone that the true simulated physics of blood, spatter, gore, and mutilation has been long perfected in gaming BEFORE the naked body in games?

How many people who’ve played games or in a “market” for polygonal flesh have been to the national museum of art? Seen the classics that you don’t see in high school books that is loaded with the human body in every possible exaggeration possible?

Leave the fetish that your covering (and its growing popularity) alone and concentrate on true perils of our society, our artificial squeamishness and our overinflated blood lust.

Well, I don’t know where you live, but here women DO run around in skimpy clothes and have most of their breasts falling out of their shirts. As to “gamers need to stand up and demand more real portrayals of women in gaming!!”, well, yeah I want more real portrayals of women….how about one where the women wait on men, fold clothes, do laundry and cook supper! That would be great! Just so you know, I 100% believe in women being independent…as long as they are back home in time for supper. Have a great day! P.S. This post requires humor and does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the poster. ;)

  8. Joelteon7 says:

I actually agree with Shawn. He says laughable though whilst I simply say ‘ridiculous’. Not to mention the fact that developer’s probably don’t realise that it might put girls off buying the game with such ludicrous images slated all over it.

It is a shame though that sex sells, however, my general interpration of that is that if that’s what they need to sell it, I don’t think it’s worth investing in. The exception being Lara Croft, which I’m looking forward to picking up on the Wii.

  9. William says:

To be honest, I agree with most of the article. I do think that the unrealistic women in games is starting to get a little old. Society should be past this stage by now. There are many terrible games out there selling due to the cover images and not the quality of the game. There’s nothing wrong with having beautiful women in games, but I think we need to be a little more realistic about things.

  10. Kathleen says:

Look. Just because some guys live where sluts walk around all day with the chest out does NOT mean half the women actually dress like that. That’s absolute SH*t… I’m so sick and tired of seeing stuff like that in games. Boys are too busy listening to the only brain most of them have, and it’s in their darn Penis. If Guys would just realize some girls don’t look that way. Go ahead. Say well you won’t get any guy then. My boyfriend oes not eve3n own one of those games. I got him one for christmas. He opened it with his brother. didn’t even know I was ther e. Told his brother to go break it and throw it away. he wasn’t playing that crap and wasn’t sure why I bought it. I bought to prove that not all guys are slime and think that FAKE people in games are okay. it’s disgusting and degrading to not only girls but women.

  11. Peter says:

Did you guys think about the people that masturbate while playing games? No! You think they’ll be able to fap faster when the women in games have realistically flat chests? WELL?

But seriously, its a video game, the violence just as the sex is unrealistic, guys know the difference but it’s also nice to have some fantasies. Way too uptight

  12. Joelteon7 says:

There’s being way too uptight and then there is being ridiculous. Games such as Leisure Suit Larry are clearly aiming for the market of, “yeah, we know it’s sex, so we’ll put in as much as possible to play up to fantasies” but other games that include it only to draw people in and don’t even make a game of it…well, that’s shameless, in two ways. Once for the developers and secondly for the people who buy it (of course, redemption if the game is fairly decent).

Fact is, we clearly don’t need games with women/girls who have…stupid sizes. The last game I saw to do that made fun of the fact (Resident Evil 4, Luis talks about the “bazooka’s”). It’s not needed and it’s pretty disgraceful. If this were to go, I think gaming would be looked at in a better light.

In short, I still couldn’t agree more with the article.

  13. A man's opinion says:

Well, personally I love games that have great graphics. But when I say great graphics, I don’t mean only lots of effects and stuff, but also nicely modeled characters. That’s precisely why I never bought any dead or alive games. The girl’s so called “breasts physics” is so unrealistic that it turns the game into something ugly. I do think that sexy/pretty characters on video games help selling them, but it doesn’t have to be vulgar.

  14. William says:

Kathleen, I agree with you. Games need to have a bit of fantasy to them, but there are so many ways they can make games cool without being degrading to women. I realize this article was a bit of a joke in some ways, but there are some serious issues involved. My primary concern with the way women are presented in games have to do with the kids who get their hands on them. They will grow up thinking it’s ok to treat women as object. Guys, go ahead and say what you want about my comment, but I do seriously think that the game industry need to take a long look at a tradition that may not be good in the end. Sure..big breasts are fine.. small ones are fine too in my book. I could care less about the half naked chicks they throw into games. I want to play games that are fun and have replay value. In most cases, when developers concentrate on the unrealistic women, the game itself ends up being terrible.

  15. B4r4 says:

    (.)(.) or GTFO

  16. Opinioned says:

I’m generally quite sick of people blaming society’s problems on video games. This is not what this article is saying, a welcome change, but still. I’m a guy gamer, I want interesting stories and good action. I have DOA4, and the eye candy, whatever you want to call it, is laughable. Sex sells, it’s a fact. In the US and abroad, in movies 95% time when the female lead has a nude scene, we see everything but the breasts or the nipples. I’m not complaining, I’m pointing out that its hypocrisy, and at best worse than whatever games do. In the movies its real people; in video games it’s a collection of pixels and polygons.

People say that because kids play video games with shooting they get violent: This is true to a point. In my opinion, kids around and under 10 years, with some exceptions, naturally, are impressionable, and shouldn’t be exposed to harmful material. But when someone’s for example 16, they’ll probably know that shooting people in games may be OK, but it’s not in the real world, and that women shouldn’t be treated like objects.

Gaming is still young and barely mainstream, and that’s why it’s getting so much attention. Every time there’s a murder, robbery or anything like that, if there’s a video game nearby, even if it’s Viva Piñata or something, immediately we get a wave of bad PR and people talking about how video games are corrupting our young. If a murderer has in his closet a Resident Evil game and every horror-murderer movie in existence, guess which gets the blame.

People who buy games for sexual content, no matter what degree, can do that: it’s their own account. I’ve been playing video games for most of my life, violent and nonviolent, mostly the first kind. I’ve played several games with well-endowed female characters. Women who know me agree to me being a very sensitive guy. Breasts aren’t the right way to sell a video game, but just because we have DOA or GTA doesn’t mean that every video game is like that.

I’m not being pretty concise here, so I’ll try and summarize: If video games try and sell by having big, bouncy boobs, then let them. Video gaming isn’t a source of society’s problems any more than anything else. Video gaming is just the scapegoat. Video games that have this kind of material get the appropriate or exaggerated rating, and if someone under that rating plays it, it’s not the game’s fault.

And that last quip about Chief… I’m a halo fan, through-and-through. I know several other halo fans, internet and in real life. None of us are depressed because we aren’t genetically enhanced super soldiers. As I said, when it comes to kids’ problems and video games, things get exaggerated every damn time. And anyone who is depressed because he isn’t as physically fit the Chief probably goes under the game’s age rating by several years. If they don’t they need professional help

  17. Oy says:

These games are made because they sell. They sell because they’re what people want to buy. Do you propose that all extremely high performance cars be removed from all games, on the grounds that men obsessed with cars will be unsatisfied with their econobox? Do you propose that we should discourage conceptualizing anything unachievable on the grounds that it’s demoralizing? I’m sure you don’t, because it’s absurd. If a guy is unsatisfied with real women because he wants someone who’s got the figure of a video game character, news flash–he’s a dick anyway, ladies, the game didn’t make him that way. If a girl feels the need to meet outlandish specifications set forth by a video game character designer, she’s unstable anyway. What are you going to do, start complaining that people who are naturally 5′10″ are abusing the 5′1″ person by existing?

Games ARE fantasy, regardless of genre. No one fantasizes about meeting a completely generic, uninspiring woman, and women have pined after “tall, dark, and handsome” for ages. It’s not a male thing, it’s not a game thing. It’s reality. Welcome to it. It’s going to be a long, cold stay if you can’t learn that people want more than what’s real.

Thanks everyone for the interesting dialog on the piece. I’m glad it promotes these sorts of reactions as that was the entire reason it was written.

  21. Opinioned says:

Using sexualized imagery to sell a video game is not a social problem. It’s a marketing strategy. Just as much as Ron Moss is a social problem for being unrealistic in Bold and the Beautiful. Let’s talk about how that offends men, when women start expecting people to be like Ron Moss or Ridge. That’s not my opinion, but I’m sure there’s one somewhere.

In the end breast physics have the same position as hair physics for example. The only thing is we have companies like Team Ninja who take it to a… different level.

I agree with Oy: It’s much more fun to meet overly attractive women than it is to meet normal or ugly ladies. Some companies just take it too far. Some companies, however, don’t take it quite anywhere. Anyone looking for equality and ugly ladies can check out Oblivion, and be satisfied.

  22. Dmitri Chouchkov says:

I bought Soul Calibur II and played it entirely as Link, does that mean I’m gay? Seriously though, I really don’t care about how the game depicts men/women/elves as long as the game is fun and engaging. However, I still thing that the processor cycles that are used to model breast metaballs (I think they use those for more jiggly breasts) could be better used for rain and water effects.

To Kathleen : It really is a shame to break a video game, I for one would have given it a chance first to see if it was any fun. It is a bit of an insult to the gift giver to break their present, but so is returning it to them or trying to pawn it off. Then again it is unfair to the recipient to knowingly put them in that position in the first place.

  23. Matt says:

    Opinioned says:

“Using sexualized imagery to sell a video game is not a social problem. It’s a marketing strategy.”

A drug dealer has a marketing strategy too, but I think we can all agree that giving illegal drugs to a 16 year old for free as a marketing strategy, so he’ll come back for more, and pay, isn’t right, but according to the logic of “its a marketing strategy,” maybe its ok, because its not the drug dealer’s fault if the kid goes back to buy more.

However, it is a problem. Just because something can be used as a strategy to sell something doesn’t make it right. I’m not sure who was first to falsely advertise a product, but it was a marketing strategy, and I bet you’d be outraged if Mcdonald’s decided to say if you eat 10 big macs a day, you’ll lose weight.

    Marketing strategy.

I think there is a need for this, because it will come a time when the adult video game industry takes off, and with the Wii, I think its very close (it doesn’t take much to imagine what kinds of adult games could be made with it). However, there’s a place for this, and I don’t think its in most games. There are problems with this; moral problems, if nothing else. Most women in video games should NOT have…large assets :P

  24. I agree with the article 100%. I was actually rambling about this earlier today. In a recent trailer for a Dead or Alive game (I’d never actually seen, only heard about DoA) that I saw just how stupid it was. Had you a girl that was standing still, if she shifted her weight, they’re suddenly flying EVERYWHERE! Where the HELL is any reality? It’s not even that good of a fantasy! (I’ll refrain from elaborating on mine.) Sadly, even some of the children-friendly games are falling to the dark side. Case in point, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Until now the Smash series had been the ultimate family-and-friends party game. But suddenly they’ve thrown in Zero Suit Samus as a sex symbol (don’t bother denying it). Luckily, she’s actually in correct (hell, it’s *reasonable*!) proportions, but still… (Note that I absolutely love Brawl, and think it will kick hind quarters.)

Anyway, that’s my ramble. Those of you that require games like DoA because of mammifera physics are, frankly, idiots. Primarily because you cannot find *any* other way to satisfy your sexual craving. Imagination was created for a reason, so go ahead and use that. You don’t need an image, much less a freaking video game, to suppress fantasies. You can instead find a real girlfriend that does happen to have extraordinarily awesome features. And if you can’t get one, then who fails at life this time? Video games are not ‘the poor man’s life’. There’s a whole hell of a lot more. Go find some and take a chunk of it.

And that was my post-ramble. Congratulations if you’ve read the entire thing.

  25. sureright says:

I have had three kids– and nursed them to boot. My boobs have a lot more movement than when I was young. I challenge any breast physics proponent to motion grab my gals in motion.

In short, any idiot would know the young fresh boobs, the ones guys want, _don’t_ move.

  26. Opinioned says:

Matt, I don’t mean it’s a justification. I agree that it’s a waste of time and processing power. I’m just indifferent on the matter. A drug dealer sells heroin to someone they shoot up and die of OD. Or become socially incapable junkies. If someone goes home and spends an hour or two playing DOA or Soul Calibur because he likes the tits, I don’t see the social problem here.

  27. Matt says:

Opinioned, I don’t mean to compare the sale of illegal drugs to the sale of games like DOA, but I was simply saying that not all strategies to market a product are good.

Also, it really isn’t a social problem that they do this. Sex sells, and a company has a single goal, to make a profit. The social problem is that it works.

  28. Major_Tweak says:

Video games are made for entertainment. For some a escape into alternate world, or just an enticement for their imagination. Sure some video games are created for realism, some are not. some of the games out on the market may have unrealistic portrayal of the female body, or maybe not. take a look at TV, ladies and gentlemen. our entire entertainment spectrum is saturated in this same way. Is it all that unrealistic? breast implants are ridiculously popular in the fashion world . even if you don’t see the similarities, does it matter? not all video games aim for realism, its just a game. a facet where anything is possible and since many men like breasts, wouldn’t it come natural for a game designer to over express it. not to mention the fact it helps sell games (sex sells, always has, always will). if you don’t like watching pornography, don’t buy a porn tape, buy a comedy movie or something. if you dot like giant bouncing lady lumps in your video games, play tetris.

  29. Opinioned says:

    Sad, but true, Major_Tweak.

I’m on the whole very sympathetic to women’s issues and I’m for equality. But the woman’s position in society has developed over thousands of years, and it’s not gonna change for real in a few decades, and especially when its most prominent supporters are radical, outspoken women who exaggerate the issue, despite its gravity.

But let’s face it: video games do nothing to hamper the position of women. Every time a game featuring voluptious women comes out, we get a wave of dismay and accusations of “having no morals”, “corrupting society”, “setting unrealistic standards” and so forth. Considering how men who play these games are also exposed to real women on a daily basis, I doubt anyone who is healthy in the head to begin with will start expecting similiar figures to come walking around every corner.

Similiarly, when Gears of War came out, did anyone raise an issue about presenting unrealistic standards of men to women? Women who assume that men become jerks because they play video games are dead wrong. There are a multitude of reasons for the ‘jerkening’, but video games aren’t one of them. Once again, video games are being used as a scapegoat

  30. Siffles says:

    Sex sells simple as that!!

  31. Dao says:

    Breast physics, shmest physics….

Listen, this is plain idiocy in my humble opinion… I totally agree with the people that buy games for the FUN OF PLAYING not the fun of WATCHING HUGE BAZOOKAS BOUNCING ROUND THE DAMN SCREEN…. It is a waste of the developers time. I mean, they put a lot of attention to the modeling of the correct breast movements, while they could be cleaning the game from bugs, optimizing performance, adding new phun features… and by “features” I don’t mean “putting Jell-0 into the boobs of all female characters in game in SUCH measures, they can theoretically straggle a man”.
As it was said too many times here, sex sells, and sells great. You have half a gazillion teens only looking to find a glimpse of exposed flesh in a game or a cartoon or pretty much ANYWHERE! Then there is the fact that, even though the stage of world-wide sexual revolution is well passed, the process continues…

To get a little farther away from boobs, take a short look at how the female part of our world is portrayed in all sorts of Fantasy RPGs and MMORPG’s… Particularly look at their “armor”. Don’t you ever wonder how an iron bra and some sort of a plate-mail skirt can protect a gal from a sword, axe or any damn weapon? And thats “female armor”. Again, sex sells.

Another example. The GTA series. And no, im not going to talk about how they put in the sex scenes in San Andreas… The Hot Coffee mod is barely scratching the surface. Take a look at women in the game… I mean regular pedestrian women. There are 3 templates of a woman pedestrian in GTA:

    1)UGLY as a damn MUTANT
    2)WHORE
    3)’Business lady’

And while the 3′rd variant is the most un-offensive variant – I have to ask… WHERE THE BLOODY HELL ARE NORMAL WOMEN? Just, plain normal… I refuse to believe that the women in a whole friggin state are limited to being prostitutes, social workers and uglies… Is this really how it is in America? I refuse to believe.

Oblivion? Different story, same meaning. All the women are equally unattractive, sometimes plain scary. What’s wrong? Is it a side effect of the Oblivion gates opened?

Alright, now some people might say: “In your first part of the post you criticize the developers for making to sexy females in game and then you say that you dont like plain and ugly ones… make ur mind up!” Well, my critic friends, there is only one answer to this problem.

Developers must keep all things to a limit. Limit the ugliness, put in a bit of nice looking ladies… not monsters with 2 gigantic melons larger then their heads… Measuring things in absolutes is wrong. There is no absolute beauty standard to which all can relate.

So that said, this breast thing is completely wrong, immoral to women and overall sexist. Here, I had my say, now you can shower me with criticism :)

Is it really this deep, ladies and gentlemen?

Some guy buys DOAXV. Aside from wondering why he isn’t playing DOAXV2, does this mean society is going to hell in a handbasket?

Gamer girl, cute (but a little big) and nerdy, is miffed because her Blood Elf warlock (as well as her Succubus minion) has a better figure than she does. Does she scream “UNREALISTIC” and start a crusade to get out-of shape women (the Gamer Grrl Campaign for Real Beauty, perhaps) in games?

Seriously, people. There are better problems to address. Self esteem, so Nina’s rack doesn’t offend the female using her while busting out the 10-string. A non-judgemental mentality, so other gamers don’t write diatribes dissing the poor guy playing Rumble Roses (while they’re simultaneously downloading Kim Kardashian’s sex tape). And, finally, a little understanding: Understanding the fact that there are a lot of us adult gamers out there, and we should be able to enjoy whatever we choose to, so long as we’re not breaking any laws or hurting anyone. So, tell you what: I’m gonna stop writing, check my porn downloads, call my GF, and figure out why my Night Elf hunter has a better physique than I do (OMG UNREALISTIC).

I’m with Sureright – all that jiggling is QUITE real in an older gal whose boobs are saggy. Not in the teenage girls who can’t hold up a pencil yet.

You want realism? How about a game where the women with the big boobs have to deal with ACTUAL PHYSICS in using a sword or bow. There’s a REASON real martial artists wear sports bras to hold their boobs in OUT OF THE WAY!

    First things first.
I am a female. I am a feminist. I also have an interest in sex and sexual behaviors. I have spent time looking into it.
I have no problem with sex in games or sex in the media. I am more than happy for there to be perfect jiggly breasts abound.
I am straight and I would rather see an attractive pair of breasts in video games and on TV than the average woman. If I have to look at something which I believe is partially an art as much as anything, I want it to be aesthetically pleasing. People in the arts have been painting and drawing the ideal breasts for years. Why should that change simply because of a change in medium?

I understand that guys need their fantasies. It’s part of their nature. Men have always fantasized and they always will about nicer breasts than the ones they have access to.

I have of course generalized. There is a minority of men and boys who are obviously not able to separate fantasy and reality.
But most guys are able to realize, that no matter how fantastic digital breasts may look, gropeable real ones ALWAYS win. And if they don’t see that and would rather sit and play with their digital lovelies, they probably wouldn’t get/don’t deserve a real woman anyway and are certainly not the kind of males I want anywhere near my gene pool.

    Love Rex

It called make believe, they’re fake, it’s slightly titillating entertainment meant to garner a smirk here and a smile there…

And similar events happen in a mall or club every day. A girl with a healthy bust and fit physic gets noticed, just the way it is. Yes other other aspects of a person’s character like a great personality is just as or more important in the long run…but a good personality doesn’t turn heads at first glance now does it ;)

I’m just saying…it’s been put in movies and games and ALL kind of marketing for a reason. It gets attention (rightly so imo) and it’s a bit of fun.

Best make your peace with it because basic anatomy isn’t changing any time soon ;)

  40. Tifa Strife says:

i agree that in video games they have boobies that no woman has like the doa women, final fantasy women, and well known Lara Croft aka Tomb Raider but its just a game nothing more than that so are you going to ask that you make them extemly ugly too because in reality no one in real life is as goog looking as video game characters

  41. matt says:

breasts kick major fucking ass, but only if they’re REAL…as in NOT ANIMATED.

  42. just me says:

    LOL!!!
Obviously they all have implants, because when they lie on their backs, their tits point to the sky just like that!

Also, too much time spent on the tits, not so much on the booty.

  43. stitch says:

Breast physics may be very exagerated sometimes, but the fact reamins, any straight male likes them to some level ( admit it), maybe we should say those kind of games and developers could care less about any female opinion, in others words DOA.

  44. Misterprickly says:

If you want realistic… GO OUTSIDE! That’s “real” 24/7.

When it comes to BOOB-PHYSICS; my only complaint is when there all set the same!

there’s nothing worse than a set of B’s flopping around like there G’s
OR a set of J’s that have as much spring as a set of A’s

I find it really sad that we as a people will allow insane amounts of violence but BOOBAGE is where we draw the line?!

I would rather see my nephew thumbing through a copy of Juggs than Guns n Ammo.

  45. GRRRRRRRRRLgamer says:

“…gamers need to stand up and demand more real portrayals of women in gaming!!”

No, I don’t want to play a video game with female characters that are 30 lbs overweight, flat chested and gigantically assed.

I find the bouncing boobies much more entertaining.

Wow, I find almost all of these comments extremely depressing. How is everyone missing the point? It’s not about men being dissatisfied with the real women they meet (…I’m really kind of shocked at the male-centeredness of such a concern–poor men will no longer be satisfied!) or that women will feel they have to live up to impossible ideals (they do,) but just the very fact that all of this OBJECTIFIES WOMEN. As in, it turns women into dehumanized objects SOLELY for the pleasure of men. I don’t care if there are ripped up dudes in video games–hey, you need muscles if you’re going to fight, and muscles imply strength and capability. The ridiculous proportions of women’s breasts in video games, however, do the exact opposite: they’re completely superfluous, they detract from any other assets she might have as a character, and put the focus SOLELY on her body, because unless the video game is about breast feeding, her exaggerated breasts, unlike a man’s muscles, have no use here except to be ogled.

Honestly, reading these comments depressed me. It’s not that it’s “getting old,” that it’s “unrealistic” or that I’m prudish because I can’t take a little nudity. It’s INSULTING. It’s insulting to me as a human being of the female sex. You can claim it won’t affect how men and women think, but how could it not? If you’re staring at certain images for however many hours of your life, of course they are going to affect you in some way; the fact that you are unaware that they may affect you can make the effect all the stronger. The saddest part is that the portrayal must also in some capacity reflect already existing attitudes, not just promote them. I think the proof for that assertion comes in some of the comments here.

Not to go on a long harangue about it, but Opinionated’s comments particularly disturbed me.

“I’m on the whole very sympathetic to women’s issues and I’m for equality. But the woman’s position in society has developed over thousands of years, and it’s not gonna change for real in a few decades…”

What do you think life was like in 1950 for a woman? Men can brush these issues off easily because they don’t feel the privilege they have because they were born with it. As a woman, I still feel like I am disadvantaged in many respects, but it’s the work of the generation before mine that changed this informal law from a formal one. Only a few decades ago, newspapers printed wanted ads in separate male and female sections, women couldn’t live independent, respectable lives without men; women were simply seen as _lower_.

Thousands of years? Are you aware that the low status of women largely came as a result of the Industrial Revolution, and that the relative status of women has varied greatly over these thousands of years? Don’t let the goodie homemaker/male breadwinner post-WWII stereotype fool you.

I’m trying not to get too steamed up about this, but I’m just shocked at the attitudes I find in this thread. Maybe the complacency comes from thinking women _are_ actually equal in society these days. Today, in 2008, women still only make 75¢ for every dollar a man makes. These are real issues.

I get upset at these remarks because it encourages a lack of respect for women, and the idea that women exist for the pleasure of men. Not to get frighteningly statistical on you all, but I always remember vividly that battering is the single largest cause of physical injury to women and that rape is really frighteningly rampant. Portraying women in this way, not as the exception but as the rule, in media (and I’m not just blaming video games) enforces the general opinion that these behaviors are ultimately options (or even acceptable).

I’m not saying make characters ugly, I’m just saying this is a real issue that deserves real consideration, not something for idle jokes and heterosexual posturing. As stitch says, it also shows a complete disregard for women’s interests in advertising and video game development. It’s a male industry directed at men, and it makes women invisible.

  47. m says:

dude, of course girls don’t look like this in real life. real life is boring, why do you think games get made in the first place?

think anyone’s gonna buy Real Life Simulator 2009 (now with taxes!)? doubt it.

also there are plenty of “unrealistic” (sexy, buff, skilled, intelligent and generally interesting) dudes in video games. hear many dudes complaining? nope. hear women crying for more fat, ugly, nerdy, sweaty, awkward and socially incompetent dudes in video games? nope. why? because no one wants to look at ugly people.

got a real kick out of the last paragraph. It’s a Male Industry directed at Men! oh noes! it will never change unless you do something about it. no game company cares about you, or women in general. you don’t buy enough games to matter. if you start buying games, you validate the current dynamic. therefore your only real option is to get some capital and start your own gaming companies. this has been done, there are several gaming companies owned by women already. as expected, the games usually end up being pretentious graphics-enhanced books designed to showcase how artsy, profound and emotionally complex the creators are, and bring a whole new level of boring to the gaming world. thanks!

by the way, normative judgments are irrelevant when it comes to video games. there is only one thing that matters, and that is profit. morality and artistic integrity are distant also-rans, if they are considered at all. any argument about whether this is the way it “should” be is masturbation. nothing “should” be any way or another. everything just is; nothing has meaning. except money. and boobs.

The sad thing is, Major_Tweak, that we can no longer buy a decent comedy without getting a little porn.
Over half the movies out there have some nudity in them, and I am not just talking about female.
We see male butts ALL the time, and breasts too! (That really grinds me when we see breasts, simply because I am a female who gets uncomfortable with nudity in general, and very jealous when the boyfriend sees ^^; )
The media has distasteful depiction of nudity. Personally, I would like to see less…
though I am kind of trailing from the point of this article.

nothing but a bunch of fat girls and little-dicked, spineless, two-faced nice guys trying way too hard pretending to care about feminism. there are real, all-natural girls with way less “realistic” (of course, in the context of nerds talking about girls, “realistic” really means “just ugly enough to wheedle into a drunken pity-fuck”) proportions than any girl imagined by a programmer or designer, and they’re not nearly as rare, as cognitively deficient, or as hateful as embittered nerds who wasted their lives on the internet because they really believed that having fifty level 80 wow characters would someday allow them to have their revenge on the successful, attractive, interesting people (read: teh evil jerks and their girlfriends), would have you believe.

btw all girls secretly want to be objectified, it’s science
