Boys Banned From Violent Videogames After Nuking Cat

Two Canadian teens who broke into a home, did $25,000 in damages and then microwaved a cat to death have avoided jail time, but are banned from playing violent videogames. According to the Edmonton Journal they’re also on strict probation for the next year complete with 9:00 pm curfews and limited cellphone access. The boys must attend therapy sessions and serve 100 hours of community service as well as pay for the $500 deductible on the homeowners’ insurance. They also can’t own an animal for two years leaving one of their families in the position of having to give up a dog they bought for the boy’s younger siblings just ten weeks ago.
For me, this raises a few questions other than why on Earth parent’s would bring a new pet into a home when their son had already gruesomely killed another animal just six months before. These kids break into a former friend’s house twice during Christmas break, steal a guitar and trash the house to the tune of 25K in damages and nuke Princess the family cat. What do videogames have to do with their behavior or is the ban considered a harsher punishment than jail time? The answer is nothing really, it just seemed like a good idea at the time.
According to court ordered psychological assessments, video games were not found to have directly encouraged the boys’ actions. But barring their access to such games was nonetheless a recommendation put forward in the assessments.
I’m with the judge on this one. It’s been nine months since the incident and these two 16 year olds still can’t say why they cooked the cat. Most people are stable enough to be able to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. The vast majority of gamers can play violent videogames without any problems. These two boys have proved that they have an incredibly destructive streak and shouldn’t be exposed to anything that might exacerbate it.
However I have to ask why only violent videogames? These two should be banned from violent television, books and films as well. They shouldn’t be exposed to anything more violent than the Little Mermaid. Maybe their parents should look into the new Petz Rescue Series.

I’ve gotta agree with Duddee, put the kid in the microwave. I hold people who injure, maim, and kill animals to be below those who do it to people quite frankly. I read the newspaper article. One family had to leave town. Boo-f***ing-hoo. They should have been run out of the country.
I feel for the poor cat, and the family who came home and found their beloved pet in the microwave.
I believe the logic goes that video games are interactive and that makes them worse than something passive like watching a movie. I think it’s a load crap myself. At 15 or 16 years they damn well should know the difference between right and wrong.
Sounds like they should have been institutionalized. I would be very surprised if this will be there last encounter with the law. And next time it may be more than a cat that gets killed.

The kids shouldn’t be able to do anything at all for a year, not just abstain from violent video games. The contextual highlighting in this whole thing is horrendous, citing violent video games as the problem. Does GTA4 have some sort of Hot Cat Explosion mod that you can unlock with some hacking or something? Clearly not. While video games may have stroked their violent thoughts, they had those thoughts in the first place nonetheless. I’m tired of things getting blamed on video games, directly or not.

These two kids need to be kept apart. But aside from this, this makes the parents look VERY bad. They didn’t teach their children empathy.

As for the computer game question, I don’t know what they were thinking. I know that the worst punishment I had as a kid was having computer games taken away from me (there’s nothing on television worth watching, so that was never a punishment). If the judge sees that as appropriate punishment for the boys, then so be it – unconventional, sure, but I don’t think it’s about whether or not computer games were a cause/aggrevator.
These two fucktards should be given a choice: Death or Castration…..and 30 seconds to decide if they haven’t made a decision after 30 seconds then they should be covered in honey and fed to hungry bears.

Gotta agree with the others here. That’s a sick, sick thing to do to an animal. Killing would be too good for these kids.
People who intentionally hurt animals are messed up. I really hope for their sake they look back on this and feel horrible about it. If they can look back and not care, I say toss them in prison.

Jail should serve them right. In the rapist cell block too. Death would just be the same as letting them escape.
They certainly have antisocial personality disorder. The punishment should have been imprisonment. They are likely to recurr on their behaviour. The next time they may hurt a person if they haven’t done that yet. They will likely end up in jail in the future.

Torture them for the next two years, kill them, stick there heads on a bloody spike and let everyone know that doing horrible things to animals and ruining someone’s home because your bored is not acceptable. This is absolutely disgusting. The teens should be put in a microwave.
The world has gotten to namby pamby on criminals. I say bring back corporal punishment for sickos like this – chop a couple of fingers off and make them work in a rock quarry for twenty years. That way, if they ever get released, every time they even think about committing a crime, they will look at their missing fingers and broken down bodies in the mirror and think twice about it.
I’ve seen plenty of violent videogames and have yet to see one that features microwaving of pets.
Moreover, I’ve played violent videogames and have never committed a violent antisocial act or crime.
What is it with people who want to blame videogames for antisocial behavior? Killing of pets was a feature of psychopathy long before there even were video games. Why can’t these kids be treated like the psychopaths they are and taken out of circulation, rather than treated as poor little misguided souls led astray by evil games???
I agree with everyone saying to hurt the kids, as an animal lover, I’d probably go crazy if anyone did anything to my cat or dog. But, I believe we should punish the parents as well, they were partially responsible for raising such fucked up children, never teaching them common sense (and the parents themselves lacking it as well)such as the difference between reality and fantasy. This is why I think some people just shouldn’t have kids, proper parenting is a must. So punish the parents as well, maybe force them to take some parenting courses to make sure the younger kids won’t follow in their older brother’s footsteps. Of course, after we nuke the kids.

The pathetic punishment these two idiots get for taking a life, is a measure of how our society devalues the lives of animals who share the world with us. A human being has the capacity to protect itself, to reason its way out of harms way – a cat does not.

Wow, those kids are out of control. I am glad to see though that the media (video games) is not getting the blame for this. I can agree with the judge whole-heartedly on the need to restrict its use. But I am just glad to see no one blames video games as the cause.

Omfg…Seriously, people that tortue animals should just burn in- down there.. I hate people that do that to animals, especially since these 2 got away with it. If that was a human, they would’ve been in jail for life or something, but if it’s a cat, no violent video games and some other stuff…wtf is that? People who torture animals need to have a worse punishment then humans, because at least a human can defend themselves, animals can’t.

Breaking and entering, vandalising the house,stealing a guitar… people get more punishment for shoplifting… and still aside from the killing of the animal, they should prolly get some time.
nd then there is the cat: personal veiw, 5-10 years of jail pending on if they regret what they did or not (nd how much), then they should have the current restrictions, with mental help for the rest of their life.

When are people going to learn that there are good people, and there are assholes. I don’t think video games played any kind of factor into this. People might want to consider the fact that there are low lives walking the Earth; Being A child shouldn’t be some kind of immunity. For every good Kid out there, there is a loser.
