Boston Dynamic’s “Big Dog” is Half of a Real-Life Metal Gear

Odds are you’ve seen this video that’s been blowing up the internet the past couple of days. It features a robot created by Boston Dynamics — dubbed “Big Dog — walking around easily on ice and snow and even recovering quickly after getting side kicked by someone. At first, I thought it was a hoax involving two coordinated guys in an elaborate costume. Then I realized no human alive could simply stumble and then get back up after being kicked around on a patch of ice. I just have one question though: did anyone else see the resemblance between this and Metal Gear Ray from the second Metal Gear Solid game? Seriously, “Big Dog” looks like what you’d get if you attached the lower halves of two Rays to a huge cardboard box.Now all they need is to add a nuclear payload, and then we’re truly screwed.

IT’S THE END OF THE FUCKING WORLD!
IT RUNS!
IT JUMPS!
IT NAVIGATES ROCKY TERRAIN!
YOU KICK IT, IT DOESN’T FALL DOWN!
IT SLIPS ON ICE, IT KEEPS GOING!
THIS IS NOT A MACHINE BUT A MONSTER!
You know, if it can handle being kicked on a patch of ice, it could handle… I don’t know… gun recoil?
Ha, if it ever comes to it being a weapons platform, we can only hope the designer is sentimental / eccentric enough to include an exploitable weak spot.
That is absolutely amazing
I hearby demand this technology is destroyed and all documentation of it be destroyed as well!
This is madness and it cannot go on any longer!
Welcome to the future, hopefully we learn to use power that’s less noisy.
OMG! Imagine a police state with those with taser attached to it for crowd control. And they will be hunting and stalking people like those spiders in minority report.
Judgement day is near, that thing is being developed for “defence”? soon it will have a shotgun and a vendetta!
seriously, that is actually scarey
That thing made my blood turn ice cold – well, more so than usual.
I could not believe it at first. I always thought that robots will be helpful up until now. But this one really scared me it is so unnatural it is just like coming out of a horror movie, so freaky.
I’ve seen footage of this a few years ago but the footage of it recovering from icy ground and the jumping is new to me. And yeah, that motor is still damn noisy.
Metal Gear…
DARPA Chief: You knew??!!
What’s worse is this probably isn’t even close to the horrors and perfection of the production line they’ve got planned for the future. Imagine this thing with more sophisticated servos and motors as well as some armored plating and other lethal goodies. Time to start developing rapidly corrosive and/or metal alloy eating rounds for rifles and shotguns, people, while we have the time. Maybe an infrared, thermal, sonar, and night vision jamming device that you keep on your person as well. R&D in an electromagnetic field generator capable of stopping shrapnel/minor gun fire and emitting an EMP burst as a last resort is a must. A concentrated sonic or EMP burst cannon would be great as well. Come on independent inventors! You effort might be for the future of a free humanity.
