Bob Hoskins: “Super Mario Brothers…was a nightmare.”

Even though it was made way back in 1993, Bob Hoskins is apparently still mad about his experience filming the Super Mario Bros. movie. In a recent interview with Guardian Unlimited, he discussed his lengthy film career, including one flop involving a moustachioed plumber:
“The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Brothers. It was a f—in’ nightmare. The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks their own agent told them to get off the set! F—in’ nightmare. F—in’ idiots.”
Well then I think Mr. Hoskins would be pleased to hear that the two directors he speaks of — Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton — seem to be the only two people whose careers effectively halted after this movie’s release (well, them and the writers, but that’s to be expected). Over a decade later, we’re still seeing films with him, Dennis Hopper, John Leguizamo, and, to a lesser extent, Samantha Mathis. I guess you really can wash the smell of a turd like that off you, but it takes a lot of scrubbing.

Watching that movie was a nightmare…
This article has no relevance to games, no-where did I see he world “delayed” and “PS3 Game” in the same sentence!
You drive a hard bargain, Peter.
Also, no where does it mention a new character or feature to the upcoming Smash Bros game. Irrelevance, I say!
Seriously I liked this movie, I was really young when I saw it so I didnt really know what I was looking at but I do remember thinking alot of the stuff was cool.
Yeah, I think it had the kiddies appeal, cause…well, I liked it when I first saw it on TV when I was yonger. The mini bob-omb (or however you spell it) was funny. It was a pretty bad film, mind you.
I liked that movie…
lol @ Peter
Hey, at least it’s not an Uwe Boll flick.
Indeed…
@peter, lol, good one man
I happened to like that movie also. Then again I viewed it as not a game movie, but a movie based on (inspired by). Kinda like fan made book series which continue a story just based on what they (the fans) feel about the characters.
I personally liked the movie too…when I was ten years old. I actually watched it again last year and it had not aged well in my opinion. It’s kind of become one of those movie I’d watch with a bunch of people just to make fun of it. Even forgetting that it’s based on a video game, it still boils down to a high-budget B-movie.
I was mostly surprised to look back at the people who worked on it, since most of them have gone on to become big names in Hollywood. Hell, Alan Sivestri did the music, and then later went on to compose the score to Forrest Gump. Still, this not their best work.
