Kris Abel from CTV posted his Wii Fit experiences on his blog recently and while there was nothing extremely mind blowing or new to add to what we already knew about the system, there was something that struck me as interesting.
This is what I found in Kris’ post worth noting:
This past Sunday I reached my goal within Wii Fit. My Mii character appeared on screen with a little bit of fanfare to congratulate me and has expressed some concern that I’ve managed to lose so much weight so quickly.
Is 2.6 pounds per week really considered loosing weight fast? If I put my mind to it and cut out the Dr. Pepper and Cheddar Cheese Ruffles dipped in Sour Cream I would automatically loose 20 pounds. But since I am not one who thinks looking anorexic is sexy, I continue to enjoy my only unhealthy indulgences. I never said everything I ate was healthy, only that my indulgences weren’t – just to clarify that for you.
I was always under the impression that 2 lbs per week was considered your target for healthy weight loss. This is what the gal at the gym told me, and also what I have read in different health books/magazines. Kris lost 2.6 lbs per week, which would only be slightly above the average, and closer to 3 pounds than 2 – so I am just curious as to what Wii Fit considers “healthy” in the realm of weight loss. Some health instructors would say that anything other than 1.5 pounds a week is detrimental to your health because if you loose more than that it will include not only fat, but muscle as well. So while there are different opinions on this subject, I am assuming Nintendo is going for the 1-1.5 lb per week average.
First, it tells a little girl that she is fat, now it tells a grown man that he lost his weight too fast. I am beginning to wonder just how accurate Wii Fit really is.

The guideline I’ve heard is always 1-2 pounds. Of course, I like to lose 4 a week, then eat three pounds of food in one sitting, or so my binge last Sunday would seem to say. I still have heartburn.
