Speaking as a composer, it's a thrill to write for games. I am and have always been convinced that good 'game music' is an important part of the overall package being marketed.

When music is an integral part of the production, instead of just an afterthought, it definitely adds to the overall enjoyment of a game. It's nice to see companies looking at a broader scope for their titles instead of focusing solely on gameplay or graphics.

Sticking just to the music and not so much the games, I'd say the music to beat is for Halo. Regardless of whether or not you like the game, it has a phenomenal score and whilst perhaps a guitar version of the Truth and Reconciliation theme isn't as good as an orchestral, the full piece in Halo 3 looks likely to blow us off the world in music alone.

I'd say though that other competitors would be the Zelda series (when they stop using computer-generated sounds and get an orchestral version, it'll be on par with Halo) and maybe Final Fantasy, which has some good stuff for it.

It does make me happy though to know that some developers don't overlook music. Whilst in some cases it adds to the game, in others, it's just great to listen to some brilliant music. I hope this doesn't disappoint.
