Bioshock

Oh PC brethren, it seems our prayers will finally be answered. The watery world of Rapture is soon upon us.

Over at The Cult of Rapture word is in that a Bioshock PC demo will finally be available later today. Just guessing here, but something also tells me the PC reviews will start pouring in too.

“The wait is nearly over. At 7 PM EST the BioShock PC demo will go live for you to enjoy. We will have exclusive pre-loading at Fileplanet. Set your watches for 7 o’clock!

IMPORTANT: Please be sure to download the latest drivers from ATI and Nvidia that will be available Monday for best performance with your video cards.”

So there you go. I’m sure after 7 PM EST we will see the internet slow down to a crawl.

    Don’t hold your breath, folks.

  2. Shodan561 says:

just to inform you, FilePlanet, just took the demo off its site for preloads…. its happening again

  3. Rollett says:

    Ohh noes!

  4. guest says:

they took it off because of problems they were having (people cracked in and got an open version of the demo, and for some reason people are torrenting it)

  5. Fadeaway says:

    Some reason?

This is exactly what I expected would happen: I pretty much sussed a release date of the 20th of August from “we’ll get it out before the 21st, honest!”. I’m still annoyed at the wait they put us PC users through.

  6. Iori says:

just chill out man… you hard core pc guys are funny as hell

  7. Fadeaway says:

So are you hardcore 360 fanboys.

“OMFG PS3 SUX SUX SUX.” “NO U” “NO U” And so on and so forth.

    Please, get out.

  8. A:/Big.bat says:

lori – Us “funny” PC users are pissed off that your silly console gets a game which should BLATANTLY have been a PC exclusive first. There was no reason for it – it’s a PC game.

  9. Jetsetlemming says:

I don’t have anything near the video card requirements for Bioshock, but I’m gonna download it anyway. :3 Hey, I managed to get Hitman: Blood Money working just fine on my DX8 video card, all it took was the latest patch and a single line in the game’s .ini. :P
I think I maybe be forced to upgrade my video card for Bioshock, however. I loved loved loved System Shock 2.
I’ve been annoyed by the ever growing focus on console gaming over PCs by publishers, but moreso by the push by PC game makers to release with the highest minimum requirements they can fit in the game. THAT’S what’s ruining PC gaming, far more than consoles. The cost of recent PC gaming is far more than a 360 or even PS3.
Part of the huge success Valve’s had with HL2 and the Source engine was the backwards compatibility and legacy hardware support they strove for with the engine. A huge number of people have the hardware to play Source games.

PC’s are what consoles try so desperately to become but never can’t. And I own a PC and an Xbox 360, so don’t call me a fanboy. This game was designed for PC first, I can tell by playing the XBL demo. I think they only put it on Xbox so it’ll make more money, especially seeing how everything on PC is pirated now.

  11. Ron says:

What a letdown that the demo isn’t available until 12 hours before I can pick up my pre-ordered copy. Is there no justice in this world?

Ah well, at least it is coming out on PC.

  12. Kev_M says:

Personally, who cares what it was made for first.
Just because System Shock 2 was a pc game doesnt mean Bioshock ‘had’ to be a pc game first.

They were jointly developed, and by different teams I might add ( as stated by the dev on a gamespot interview )

And if it helps more money by selling it on 360 also, then surely thats good news for the PC market also, means we’re more likely to see a bioshock 2 or some other form of follow up to this amazing title.

Get over yourselves and stop this age old childish arguement of “i’m better than you!”.

  13. lazlonger says:

    @Kev_M

And I’m sure your little scolding rant is in no way an attempt by you to feel “better than” the rest of the commenters here, right Kev?

The point is the continued sidelining of PC gamers and the millions of dollars we have funneled into this industry in the last ten-15 years, and now the consoles finally BEGIN to catch up and we are left by the side of the road, NO games available in brick and mortar stores, slow development of PC versions way behind console versions. This game has repeatedly been reviewed as far superior on the PC, comes from a legacy PC classic title, is a Steam vehicle, has DirectX10 support, etc etc etc. No demo pisses us off, with VERY good reason.

  14. - says:

I seriously doubt the demo will be out today. 2K has totally and utterly messed this up. I’m gonna buy another game just to say “thank you”.

  15. Kev_M says:

I accept your reasons, but surely the nature of the problem comes down to exactly why pc gamers are experiencing the delays and problems.

Its the technology that helps keep pc’s on the cutting edge of advancement, that at times, also hinders software updates and releases.

I mean I fall into neither market, I enjoy both PC and Console gaming, but I appreciate, that with consoles your working to a set specification which will radically speed up any sort of development and bug issues.

For years we pc gamers have experience hardware compatibility issues because there are hundreds of thousands of different setups out there that need to be tested for, and even the devs themselves said they were disappointed not having the pc demo ready to go at the same time, but its exactly these bugs and compability issues that slow the process down.

Atleast when alls said and done, you will have a ’superior’ version of the game to play with, based on the reasons you just specified.

  16. Daniel says:

It’s amazing how a lot of the discussions in the majority of our articles are always PC gamer vs. console gamer. Can’t we all just get along and just enjoy games and not get all high and mighty because you believe your choice of platform is THE way to go. Both PC & console have their strengths and weaknesses. And since we are all individuals who can make up their own minds and have their own preferences, let’s just accept each other for what we individually prefer rather than bash one another.

In the end, we all have one thing in common. We all love video games.

  17. jimmy says:

and now? i thougt it´s ready to load at 7:00 o`clock pm?!?!?!?

  18. CobraR1 says:

Look I own the PS3 Xbox 360 and A top end Pc complete with 4gb of ram and a 8800 gts to match and I just have to say first off The pc is unmatched in speed, power, and graphics but the Ps3 comes very close I have had to buy only one and it never gives me problems I have had to get my 360 repaired 4 time already not to mention is is subpar in graphics and technology. the ps3 is the console that needed to get bioshock it is the only console with the power to run the game but that aside The pc will never be touched because it can be upgraded the newest technology any time were as the crap box 360 and PS3 have a 6-10 year life span and by that time the pc is light years ahead as always so in the end pc will always be the best!!!!!! Now having said all that Bioshock is going to rule period who cares the demo is coming out only 1 day before release I want the finished and complete product anyways and not to mention considering what the download speeds are going to be cause everyone is going to be tring to download the demo it will be tommorrow before u can play the game anyways so save the hd space and just wait for the game!!!!!!!! or not your choice

  19. Peter says:

Wait for the game? The demo is free and it’s to let people know what the game feels like and looks like, basically it’s what alot of customer base their purchase on.

But yeah, torrenting and pirating has screwed PC Gamers over

  20. Fadeaway says:

I don’t know about you, lazlonger, but Steam doesn’t really register as a GOOD selling point.

And Daniel, there are far more heated ‘debates’ regarding the 360 and PS3. A computer isn’t strictly a games console and both hardware & software, though similar in some cases, mostly differ from each other.

  21. Jetsetlemming says:

I torrented the demo (Fileplanet, per usual, screwed up the distribution. GOD I hate Fileplanet.), but alas, I couldn’t force it to work. I didn’t realize it was made with the Unreal engine until I started messing around in the settings .ini’s, heh.
Also, 2K included Securom with the demo, and I had to restart my computer before I could run it as it detected a “process explorer” running on my computer. Gah. I’m really sick of this bullshit. It’s hardly like securom has ever stopped a single game cracker in history.

  22. Super says:

    @ guest.

OMG… I thought you were bsing me about the demo being torrented. I check it out and there is one. Yay for the underground!!!

  23. Fadeaway says:

24% from AusGames at an average of 100 KB/s.

  24. Super says:

    7.4% :???:
Looks like I will just be downloading tonight by ftp, lol.

Woulda been better if I had known that yesterday :)

  25. JohnnyK says:

So, is there a way to play Bioshock demo, if i got a securom error upon starting game? Please help.
