mtv celebrity deathmatch

Last week, I posted a fun little video from MTV showcasing Aerosmith, Journey and Michael Jackson in all of their pixilated glory. Today, I ran across another article on one of my favorite websites which shows eleven different video games featuring musicians slashing, flying, and punching their way into video game history, or fallacy. To be honest with you, the existence of some of these games came as a total surprise to me – who would have known that The Thompson Twins actually had a video game? Only those in the UK most likely, because it was for the Sinclair Spectrum which was an 8-bit home computer that used software distributed on audio-cassette tapes. The grand idea from The Thompson Twins, was that a fan could purchase their album, record the computer code on to a cassette, and then load it onto the Spectrum. Yes, you guessed it, by all accounts the game sucked big time, but in this day and age, nothing is truly gone or forgotten with the internet being as accessible as it is – you can still play the hideous The Thompson Twins Adventure online.

Other games mentioned in the post are as follows:

  • The 1978 KISS pinball machine – which rocked and still does
  • Journey Arcade Game – which we already covered
  • The Thompson Twins Adventure – the afore mentioned laughable attempt at a game
  • Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker – which we have already covered
  • Make My Video- games featuring INXS, Kriss Kross and Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch
  • Crüe Ball – A pinball game for the Sega Genesis
  • Revolution X – which we have already covered
  • Rap Jam: Volume One – A basketball game featuring Warren G, Public Enemy, Queen Latifah, House of Pain, Coolio, and Onyx
  • Wu-Tang Shaolin Style – I never knew the Wu-Tang Clan had a video game, how many of you knew this – honestly?
  • MTV’s Celebrity Deathmatch – Although a poor game, the hilarity factor more than made up for it, plus how can you go wrong with seeing the grotesque looking Marylin Manson in full S&M gear getting his ass whipped by Carrot Top?
  • The Def Jam Games – Let’s also not forget that 50 Cent had a video game too

For the full article, which is great, along with plenty of cool and hilarious pictures – please check out the WIRED website. Have a great Thanksgiving folks!

I had the Wu Tang game but it was called Taste the Pain over here.

I dont know if you ever heard of a game called Thrill Kill but it was all set to be the 90’s version of Manhunt 2 with 4 players beating each other to death with extreme finishing moves. Anyway the game was canceled but then released in a toned down version with Wu Tang characters.

It had a nifty little controller to buy separately:
