Since Sony’s announcement of a price drop for the 60GB PS3, a new batch of rumors have begun cropping up concerning a possible price cut for the 80GB model. Michael Pachter, an industry analyst, is predicting the newer version of the system to drop to a price of $499 once the 60GB version is sold out completely. Furthermore, he believes that the price will be lowered even further in early 2008.
I’m sorry, but this just seems like wishful thinking at this point. Why, when they’ve just unveiled a new PS3 bundle, would Sony even consider dropping it’s price right off the bat? They’ve unfortunately got consumers right where they want them: being forced to buy a $600 system if they want to play PS3 games.

This is what I was saying last week. It’s obvious that the price will drop once the 60gb’s are all sold.
There’s nothing “obvious” about it. These are rumors from the same people who claimed that Microsoft would announce a price cut on the 360 at E3. I agree with Jonathan (the author of the post), it seems like wishful thinking.
Good ol sony. They said once the 60GBs are gone they will sell the 80 GB for the old expensive price. If they are smart they will drop the price of the 80GB model when the 60s are gone. if not they just shot them selves in the foot.
Customers dont like getting shafted on price or features. As for the gurentee drop, nothing is in stone. i can bet if they dont lower the price customers will be more turned off. nothing is as bad as lowering a price and then raising it for a product. and dont complain about the extra 20 GB difference, A Game or what ever. A $100 price drop is what will better its chance to sell it.
they’ll probably drop the price of the 80gb to make room for some even more ridiculously unnecessary PS3.
I don’t think sony will opt for a price drop as soon as the 60GB stock runs out. It seems more likely they’ll just make the 80GB a bigger bundle by adding a controller and another game like they did in europe.
Either way i’m not expecting any more announcements about prices or bundles until at least mid-november.
I thought it was CAPCOM who started the PS3 price drop rumor.
