phenom AMD: Spider Gaming Platform

AMD has announced the launch of its new Spider desktop gaming platform. Spider features three pronged approach to a high end machine built exclusively for the gaming enthusiast.

The AMD Phenom quad-core processor, the ATI Radeon HD 3800 series graphics card and a motherboard based on the AMD 790 chipset are the holy trinity that make up the AMD Spider platform. It’s an elitist setup and won’t function with a lower-end AMD processor, the older Radeon HD 2000 series graphics cards or even the new AMD 770-based motherboards.

The Spider offers PC gamers scalable platform performance, HD technology leadership, and energy-efficient design. Get the full specs on AMD’s newest gaming platform on Tech ARP.

This system suffers from 2 slight problems. The Phenom processors are crap and AMD will be playing catch up on Intel for years and ATi are currently lagging behind Nvidia.

The only reason I can think of for buying this is if you are definitely going to install 4 GPUs but that will still leave you with a crappy CPU.

  2. Ron Whitaker says:

Unfortunately for AMD, Norbit is right. The Phenom lags behind the Intel chips, and the ATi is struggling to keep pace with nVidia. Unless this is a value priced system, don’t look for it to fly off shelves.

Thanks for sharing. That’s good to know.

  4. Norbit says:

I was just checking out some benchmark tests against the equivalent Intel processor. The Phenom 9600 which costs £199 ($410) was beaten in every single test by the Intel Q6600 which costs £167 ($344). The Intel CPU’s also allow far more overclocking as well so after overclocking the difference will be even bigger.

The simple fact is that at the moment the best AMD quad core processor is outgunned in performance and price by the cheapest one Intel sell.
