Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures takes a look at the ranged combat system for the upcoming MMO. The ranged combat system has gone through some changes since its inception. Not everything that looks good on paper plays well. So here are the chunky bits on how the system works.
Players can choose to use first or third person to shoot. First person will sport a cross-hair which will be a little more difficult for targeting, but yield a trade off in greater distance. Third person will use the same cone system that is used for spell casting. This is a nice compromise between first person perspective archery and ranged attacks in most other MMOs.
The article also covers ranged combos, and the advantages of taking an actual ranger class such as being able to shoot while on horse back. It also covers weapons and of course unique abilities of the ranger class. Imagine sniping from a hiding spot with the chance of dazing your opponent rendering them helpless and at your mercy.
The ranged combat system is not yet set in stone and will likely experience minor adjustments during the beta. However, the developers are confident they are producing a “much more dynamic and hands-on targeting system, but also introducing strategic features such as stances, combos for rangers and so on” that will make Conan’s ranged combat experience stand out in the crowd of MMOs.
