age of conan

After four years of development co-publishers Funcom and Eidos have announced that Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures has gone gold. The MMO is about to hit the store shelves, and soon we will be able to break down the gates to the world of the mighty barbarian and adventure, slay, and womanize our way to victory!!

The devs have a lot in store for players of AoC, and according to Gaute Godager the game’s Director and Producer:

“The launch is just the beginning. I believe we have created a game that will stand the test of time by its own accord, but we are already busy planning future features and expansions. We want to continue expanding Conan’s world for many years to come, and we have great ideas on what to do!”

Cool, and guess what else? Pricing for the MMO was revealed as well, and it is not as bad as you would think. The game itself will run you $59.99 (€49.99) and your monthly fee will be $14.99 (€12.99). If you think that $14.99 a month is a little steep, just don’t order pizza one night a month and you have paid for it.

Age of Conan launches on May 20th in North America and May 23rd in Europe.

How is that not bad pricing? $60 for a PC game is $10 more than normal for a launch title. And $15 a month is the high-end for monthly fees for MMOs. Perhaps Stephany was being sarcastic? I can't see any other reasoning.

Seriously, for $60 with a MMO, gimme free multiplayer. Or my own server.

  • Stephany says:

Actually, for once in my life, I was not being sarcastic.

It is not really THAT bad. Like I said, forego ordering pizza with breadsticks and a 2-liter once a month and you are covered. I don't mind paying for something that is quality, but if the game ends up sucking, then it will not be worth 2.00 a month.

Now, the price of the disc itself, yes, I have to agree with you there - esp considering it is usually console games that cost that much.

  • Stephen says:

Its 60 for the xbox 360 version which won't be out for a long long time. However, for the regular PC version its 50 dollars… see here http://www.ebgames.com/browse/ProductMerch.aspx?groupid=10

  • Stephany says:

    Even better :-)

  • huh? says:

    So… a year costs like… $180?

I am never willing to pay that much for a game…

  • taintedzodiac says:

There's a core difference between paying $14.99 for a game's online features and paying $14.99 for a pizza: you can get both a pizza and online gaming for much cheaper. I expect a $15 pizza to be delicious, just as I expect any game that costs $15 a month to be much better than this one is going to be.

  • Ron Whitaker says:

The viability of the pricing model depends solely on one thing: How well can they support the game?

If FunCom is able to provide regular content updates (free of charge, of course) along with tweaks, balance, etc… through patches, then the pricing model is viable. That's how WoW got to be the 800 lb. gorill ait is today. People decided that the work Blizzard put into was worthy of their $15.

We'll have to wait and see if AoC elicits a similar response.

For those that feel the price is too high…We won't miss you in game.

This is not far off from any major MMO that has been released in the last 5 years. DAoC, CoH, SWG, WoW…all about the same. The only one that really broke the rules was Guild Wars and, in my opinion, you got what you paid for it.

  • DanVanCool says:

The AOC crew still has kinks to get over as many online games do when they first come out. Let them work it out them, then judge for yourself.
If you like it, play on. If not, have fun playing somthing else. Id rather not read other people try to convince me the game aint worth it.
The game it great, and Im enjoying the few hours a week I play it.

Im just glad something decent is out that has to do with Conan and his world.
