The death of Gary Gygax was certainly sad for anyone who played D&D at one time or another. Fortunately, Gygax will be remembered for what D&D has done for society and gaming as a whole. We may not realize it, but video games have been heavily influenced by the pen and paper past of gaming. 1Up came up with a list of 5 primary things they learned from D&D:

1. Everything can be reduced to numbers

  • 2. You’re not alone
  • 3. Players want to own their character
  • 4. Emergent gameplay is good gameplay
  • 5. Good stories compel, poor stories suck

I have to agree with you on the history and evolution of video games the pen and paper past has influenced the more modern versions and yes I’ve learned some things from D&D too.

I have a lot of fond memories of playing D&D growing up. I remember back in those days many people also looked down on the game and were blaming it for violence in society. I guess some things never change.

Although I don’t really play anymore, I certainly realize the things I learned from it.
