1080 Deinterlacing and Quarterly PS3 Firmware Updates Confirmed by SCE Engineers

PS3-owning audiophiles recently got word that the oft-requested DTS-HD Master Audio feature would be coming quite soon in a firmware update. But for those of you that are more video-oriented, you’ll be glad to hear that 1080 deinterlacing is something you can “look forward to.”

This news comes from an interview with SCE engineers about the recent v2.20 firmware update. A lot of it has to do with what to expect in future updates, including in-game XMB support — it’s a feature that’s been discussed at Sony, but they’re not ready to put a date to it just yet. Don’t hold your breath, though, as there is no indication that this is an imminent feature.

If you use your PS3 as a Blu-ray player, you’ll definitely want to stay on top of keeping your firmware up to date as new encryption keys are released. According to the interview, image quality in the newest firmware is much better than v1.80, which included the latest key. (Although, considering this interview had to be translated, take that with a grain of salt.)

Large firmware updates can be expected once a quarter, although the upcoming v2.30 will be an exception to that as the new PlayStation Store is launched.
